VT Ocean Sciences' Ship-Time Prize
01 Oct 2002
VT Ocean Sciences, the joint venture between VT Group and the University of Wales at Bangor, has launched a scheme for applicants within the European marine science community who want funded ship-time aboard its research ship launched in the summer of last year, RV Prince Madog.
Ian Piper, VT Sciences' General Manager, explains: 'We recognise the value of the work being carried out by many marine scientists and felt it would be a good idea to pledge our support with this gesture of ship-time aboard our 35m NERC-designated vessel.'
As a result, applications are invited for projects making a significant contribution to current environmental debates and with a potential to influence a wider public. Applicants with an interest in post-graduate training in practical marine science will also be welcome.
The prize on offer is five days aboard Prince Madog during next year for a proposed science or training project for which the winner will be awarded a certificate before being invited to present a lecture at a future Challenger Society event.
A science prize, peer-reviewed by NERC, will be awarded on the basis of scientific merit and originality while that for training will be dependent upon proposed training outcomes and a potential to satisfy future requirements of scientists at sea.
Applicants must provide a letter of nomination, a nominee's CV and a two-page science case or outline training plan. The closing date for submissions is 17 December, with the winner being announced next February.
Applications should be sent to Prince Madog Prize, Vosper House, 223 Southampton Road, Portsmouth PO6 4QA or email to princemadog@vtis.com.
