The modern vessel is not only longer than conventional carriers of her type, at 110m, but also boasts a triple hull and a twin-propeller propulsion plant comprising two Mitsubishi MPTA-S-12R engines, each of 735 kW.

Breko Nieuwbouw in Papendrecht took the order and subcontracted sections. The Slob Shipyard in Papendrecht and Bujs in Krimpen/Ijssel built the centre section. The stern was built at Zwijenburg in Krimpen/ Ijssel and the bow at the Elting yard in Papendrecht. Gas tanks were readied at Gronemeyer & Blanck in Steinhagen.

Finally the Slob yard joined up all the sections.

A VTG Lehnkering spokesman said at the launching of LRG Gas 85 in Duisburg that she 'sets new standards in terms of safety, quality and cost-efficiency in hazardous goods shipping.

It also makes an important contribution to the sectior as a whole ? making inland waterway vessels even more attractive as a means of transport', the spokesman said.

The vessel in fact offers 1,740 tons dwt , which is higher than conventional ships and, despite her length and 11.45m width, can also still navigate canals.

Her side tanks can be filled with ballast to comply with a height of profile at the waterline of 4.5m and her wheelhouse can be raised up to 6.5 m above the deck to improve visibility while manoeuvring in confined waters.

LRG Gas 85 has eight gas tanks of total 2,720m 3. She is designed primarily for the transport of liquids including Raffinat 1, C4 Mixture, Butane, Propane and Ethylene. She is also packed with state-of-the-art nautical equipment, including the ship channel information system Radarpilot 720 for GPS integration.
