Lift Off For Teesport Expansion
01 Aug 2003
The new facilities will be fully operational by this autumn but the first container ship has been successfully discharged at the terminal, with Corus Shipping's feeder vessel Elke transhipping deep sea boxes which had arrived at Felixstowe.
Containers travelling to the UK, mainly from the Far East with products destined for the north of the country, can be forwarded from Felixstowe to Teesport by sea with considerable savings over road haulage from the East Anglian port on the congested UK road network.
The current container terminal at Tees Dock has seen volumes grow by 200% over the last three years, putting the old Tees riverside terminal, TCT1, up against its effective capacity. Investment in the new terminal is part of an ongoing commitment by PD Teesport to bring a greatly increased number of vessels into the northeastern UK, creating a central hub port for both the import and export of goods.
