Carbon Fibre Propellers Launch
01 Aug 2003
While the marine industries have enjoyed the advent of carbon fibre technology for masts, hulls and other maritime applications, propeller technology had seen little similar benefit over recent years.
That changed at seawork2003 when Southampton UK based Fleetwater Marine Ltd launched a range of Contur Marine Propellers manufactured in Germany by AIR Fertigung-Technologie GmbH.
Although there are other carbon fibre propellers currently on the market which use fine carbon particles moulded with resin, Conturs differ in being manufactured from a combination of carbon, aramide, and many layers of carbon fibre matting cut and laid in a precise offer to allow the propeller blade to flex in a pre-determined manner.
Contur Marine Propellers thus continually adjust to the load applied and the conditions encountered, thereby allowing optimal pitch at all times. This 'intelligent' propeller concept translates to a claimed 15% increase in speed and acceleration compared to cast bronze propellers plus the same percentage saving on fuel cost, for concurrently increased range. Conturs weigh up to 70% less than their bronze counterparts and the corrosion resistant self pitching blades are replaceable. Optimal pitch at all times delivers quiet operation, with almost no vibration, humming or cavitation.
Three ranges of Contur Marine Propeller designs are available to suit all sizes and styles of vessels, be they displacement, semi-displacement or planing for commercial, military or leisure use. Propeller sizes range from 50cm up to 5m in diameter with larger or special one-off designs also available.
