  • Indoor Diving Fun at Ocean Frontier Attraction

    Europe's largest indoor dive pool and techquarium has opened on the site of a former sewage works at Fort William in Scotland. The £2.5m Ocean Frontier attraction received funding from a variety of sources, including Lochaber Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise , and complements the £30m Fort William Waterfront Development which aims to make a feature of the town's lochside location. 

  • CTG Delivers Subsea Buoyancy Tanks

    Composite product specialist CTG has won a contract to supply 16 large carbon composite buoyancy tanks to Thales Geosolutions . The filament-wound carbon fibre epoxy tanks have been designed, developed and manufactured at CTG's Banbury UK facility.

  • Barrow to Get 400-berth Marina

    Barrow-in-Furness in the northwest of the UK is to have a 400-berth marina built as part of a wide-ranging £40 million plan to regenerate the town. If the project as a whole goes ahead as planned, it should create many jobs and bring hundreds of acres of dockland back to life, says the agent for Cumbria County Council leading the project, West Lakes Renaissance.

    The Europort exhibition last month in Amsterdam saw a variety of new products unveiled across the maritime spectrum. In the field of Navaids, a significant product launch from Tideland Signal was the new SB-98P shallow water polyethylene multi-purpose buoy which is particularly suited to shallow water areas, rivers and estuaries.

  • Tanker Giant Joins ECDIS Trial

    Oil tanker operators Teekay Shipping is the latest shipping company to enrol for sea trials of the forthcoming Admiralty ECDIS Service , which is expected to launch in Spring 2004. Trials are being conducted to test and prove all aspects of the service ahead of launch. The service has been developed by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to minimise navigational risk for shipping companies while maximising safety and operational benefits. 

  • Europort Debut for Satellite Vessel Tracking System

    UK based operator of global satellite based telematics information services Satamatics travelled to Amsterdam to launch a new miniature SAT 101 mobile satellite terminal at Europort last month. The new terminal, with its integral GPS receiver enables port authorities and other coastal operators to track the location, speed and heading of their vessels from any desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection. 

  • McMurdo Launch Explosion at Europort

    McMurdo Limited , the Portsmouth UK based manufacturer of marine electronic and safety equipment had an eventful Europort last month, revealing a new corporate branding and launching two new products plus a new website. 

  • SatComs Extended to Smaller Vessels

    One of the many exhibitors showing new marine communications equipment at Europort last month was France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications , which introduced Inmarsat Fleet 55 and 33 mobile satellite services. These mean that Inmarsat's Fleet family of maritime communications is no longer restricted to the high seas or transoceanic shipping, as medium sized and smaller vessels can now benefit from comprehensive sitcoms equipment.

  • Rubber Prop Shaft Bearings for Nuclear Ice Breaker

    Murmansk Shipping Company operates the world's largest nuclear powered river ice breaker. The 1987 built Taymir generates 45,000kW of propulsive power which drives through three water lubricated closed propeller shaft installations. Each shaft has a diameter of 950mm and weighs up to 62 tonnes. The propeller and its hub weigh 50 tonnes. 

  • Euronav Launch Budget AIS

    The collision avoidance benefits of AIS will become more financially accessible to the operators of smaller commercial and leisure vessels when Euronav launches its low-cost Ai3000 AIS receiver at the 2004 London International Boat Show . The £799 (Inc VAT) NMEA compatible receiver can be linked to current PC chart plotter systems to graphically display the location and received information of any AIS equipped vessel within VHF range. 

  • 'Tricolor' Salvage Suspended

    Salvage operations in the English Channel to remove the sunken car carrier Tricolor and its cargo have been suspended due to hostile weather conditions. Based on weather statistics from the past, it could be April or May 2004 before work can resume. 

  • Hi-Tec Acquires Bollom

    Maidstone UK based Hi-Tec Spray Ltd has grown as a UK force in surface coating technology for the marine industry following its acquisition of Bollom Finishing Equipment . The newly expanded company now has a team of 40 service engineers based at branches in Manchester, Coventry, Bristol, Southampton, Stowmarket, Maidstone and south east London. 

  • Remote Upgrade to 1000 Ships

    ChartCo has achieved a major technical milestone by broadcasting its upgraded user software, oceanMaster , direct to over 1,000 ships at sea. This software upgrade, including integration with existing on board database records, was conducted remotely with no need for on board engineering attendance using ChartCo's L-band satellite communications broadcast system. ChartCo's data services include navigation, weather and news. 

  • Submarine Sandwich Course for Portsmouth Apprentices

    A group of apprentices from Portsmouth based shiprepair specialist Fleet Support Limited (FSL) has played a key role in restoring a World War II midget submarine on display at the HMS Dolphin museum in Gosport. 

  • Fast Cat Travel to Boat Show

    Visitors to the 2004 London Boat Show , taking place next month at the ExCel Exhibition Centre in the Docklands, will be able to travel towards the show from central London along the River Thames on a high speed catamaran. 

  • First ISSC Certificate for Boxship

    Maritime and Underwater Security Consultants (MUSC) have had the first Ship Security Plan onboard a container vessel to be verified by the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency . The ISPS compliant security plan was written by London based MUSC to be used on board Zodiac 's commercial cargo carrier CMACGM Normandie . The plans which have been in place on the vessel for the mandatory two months were given a successful MCA audit in Southampton last month. The ship will now be awarded the International Ship Security Certificate . This is the first ISSC certificate to be awarded to a container vessel. MUSC have been working throughout the world on hundreds of similar vessels to meet the deadline before implementation of the ISPS code in July 2004. 

  • VOSTA LMG Launch Vietnam Dredger

    A 1,500m 3capacity trailing suction hopper dredger ordered from VOSTA LMG andbeing built at Damen Shipyards Cargo Vessels in Hoogezand, Holland for Vietnams's Waterway Dredging and Construction Co No1 waslaunched last month. 

  • Oil Pollution Conference Date

    With the continuing impact of the Erika and Prestige sinkings still resonating through the European maritime community and beyond, the announcement of the 17th Annual Oil Pollution Conference could not be more timely. The event will be held in London on 15 and 16 March 2004, followed by a practical workshop on Control of Oil Spill Response on 17 March. 

  • New Acquisition

    As of last month, equity investor EquiVest , represented by Munich based CBR Management GmbH , has acquired from EMG EuroMarine Electronics , a Hamburg based Rheinmetall Group company, the business operations of STN Atlas Marine Electronics GmbH ofHamburg. The new company will operate under the name of SAMElectronics GmbH . 

  • Lloyds Beal Acquires Enviroquip

    Lloyds Beal , the once traditional anchors and chains group which now hires and tests all forms of lifting gear, is moving into the environmental services market with the acquisition of Enviroquip Ltd . The business also provides independent recycling and waste management consultancy services, including a recycling network to partner recoverable waste producing businesses with potential re-users. 

  • UK Call for Early Boxport Decisions

    The UK House of Commons' Transport Select Committee has published its long awaited report on the nation's ports industry. The report has recognised the need for additional container port capacity, stating that 'Suitable berths are essential if the United Kingdom is to retain direct shipping services rather than being served by transhipment from Continental ports.' 

  • Cheetah Goes Surfing at Bude

    Isle of Wight based Cheetah Marine have delivered a 6.2m Cheetah catamaran to a commercial fisherman in Bude, Cornwall who will use it for potting and netting off the North Cornish coast. With a shallow sand bar guarding the entrance to Bude harbour and heavy Atlantic surf often rolling in, the Cheetah was chosen for its shallow draft, stability and sea keeping qualities. 

  • ABB/A&P Repair Alliance

    Marine turbocharging and servicing company ABB has entered into a non-exclusive alliance with A&P Southampton to provide enhanced ship repair and support services for vessels calling at the port. 

  • Stiff Stuff for Shaking Sheerlegs

    Netherlands based engineering company Techno Fysica BV specialises in solving problems related to the dynamic loading of machinery and installations using several measuring and analysis techniques. In a recent case demonstrating how a combination of good components can go wrong when insufficient attention is paid to the integration aspects of the final installation, Techno Fysica was called upon to address vibration problems on board a floating sheerlegs. 

  • European Commission Publishes Ships Blacklist

    One year on from the Prestige disaster which devastated the coast of Spain, the European Commission has published the first list of ships which have been definitively banned from EU ports. 

  • Fugro Acquires Thales Geosolutions

    Thales and Fugro have finalised an agreement under which Fugro has acquired Thales Geosolutions for 147.5 million in cash. UK headquartered Thales Geosolutions , which has some 2,000 employees worldwide and forecasts revenues for this year above ? 200 million, is expected to complement Fugro insupplying the survey, positioning and construction support markets. 

  • Christmas Cheer for Marine Renewables

    Christmas came early for everyone involved in the fast developing marine offshore renewable energy industry with the British Government's 1 December announcement that it would increase the Renewables Obligation scheme from 10% by 2010 to15% by 2015. The 50% boost in the Renewables Obligation follows extensive lobbying from the wind industry on the need for action to ensure greater investor confidence in the renewables sector.

  • New 24m Piling Barge Under Build for Walcon Marine

    Fareham UK based Walcon Marine , specialists in the design, manufacture and installation of marinas, has purchased a new 24m piling barge which is currently under construction at the Aveco Shipyard on Teesside. The design was developed by Walcon Marine with the detailed design and project management by John Pattison Associates . The purpose built, self propelled barge will be completed in March 2004 and go into service immediately with the company. 

  • Van Oord ACZ Chosen for Kent Coastal Protection Contract

    Van Oord ACZ Ltd has been chosen by the UK's Shepway District Council to carry out one of the biggest coastal protection schemes ever planned for the district's shoreline. The £17m Hythe to Folkestone Harbour Coast Protection Scheme is designed to protect against flooding and erosion for the next 50 years. 

  • Wave Study Tests Art Centre Design

    The design team for a proposed international venue for the visual arts is working with marine engineering experts at HR Wallingford to test the forces of waves which will crash into the gallery and stone pier structures at its coastal location in Margate, Kent UK. 

  • Landfall Works Complete Africa/Europe Pipeline Link

    Constructing two delicate landfalls in Sicily and Libya, the Belgian DEME Group is creating the tailpiece for linking North African gas resources to the European mainland. The work is being executed by Sidra , DEME's Italian subsidiary, and Tideway , the specialised DEME subsidiary which services the global oil and gas industry. 

  • Gareloch Celebrates Busy Birthday

    Scotland's Gareloch Support Services (Plant) Ltd is celebrating 15 years in the commercial marine support industry with its marine civils department typically busy on a UK west coast project repairing all load bearing piles on a jetty. The job involves the removal of old steel casings and the injection of UW concrete into specially designed shutters both above and below the surface.

  • Rolls Royce Designs and Equipment for Coastguard ETVs

    Two important orders have been placed very recently for Government funded Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs). Both France and Norway are to have sophisticated vessels built and operated under commercial contracts. The designs selected for the new contracts, one new ship for Norway and two for France, are from the design team at Rolls Royce in Ulsteinvik, Norway. 

  • KOTUG Strengthen the Management team

    Kotug International BV , operator of harbour towage services in Rotterdam Hamburg and Bremerhaven, has announced the appointment of two additions to their management team. Mr Dorus Knegtel, is appointed a Director of the company to be responsible for strategic issues, business development, quality and safety. Mr Kommer Tanis was recruited as a member of the management team to co-ordinate the salvage and offshore operations of the group and give nautical/ technical and operational support in Business Development. 

  • New Carrousel Tug Design is Offered by Novatug

    Novatug , a Rotterdam-based company formed to develop and market the unique Carrousel towing system, has launched a new Compact Carrousel tug design. This follows the successful completion of trials with the promised winch system. 

  • Towlines

    French shipbuilder Socarenam of Boulogne has completed Rascas a Voith-Schneider tractor for the French Navy. The tug is powered by two Baudouin 12P15-LS diesels of 660bhp each, driving type18GII/115 Voith propulsion units. 

  • Damen Build Terminal Tugs for Sonasurf

    An important recent delivery from Damen Shipyards Gorinchem yard was a series of three terminal tugs for the French company Sonasurf , for use in Angola. Completed in July, August and November, the vessels were named Kakulo , Nemed and Aeger, respectively. This latest trio follows three almost identical tugs built for the company between 1998 and 2001. The tugs are of the well-established ASD 3211 design capable of shiphandling, escorting, fire-fighting and pollution control duties.
