Sales Surge for Shipwreck Oil Recovery System
01 Dec 2003
JLMD Ecologic Group , the French company which has invented and patented the JLMD System for recovering fuel oil from sunken ships, has signed its first three orders for a total of 14 ships after only six weeks of marketing the new product.
The JLMD System is currently the only pre-installed system that can recover fuel from the tanks of sunken ships. It can be installed on any kind of tanker, newbuild or retrofit, single or double hulled, and works in all weather conditions and regardless of how the ship lies on the seabed. Claiming a 70% to 90% reduction in oil pollution, recovery of oil from a ship's tanks is possible within a week once the extraction hoses are connected. Pre-installation of the JLMD System leads to quick and clean recovery from a shipwreck without need to breech the hull, use immersion pumps or make complex installations.
Explosion risks are also eliminated.
JLMD's confirmed orders come from Qatar Navigation (two newbuilds), Qatar Shipping (six newbuilds), and Greece based French company Jet's Cargo Bulk (five newbuilds and one retrofit). Other potential orders are awaiting confirmation, leading JLMD to anticipate contracts for some 100 ships over the next two years.
In addition, the French Government, through the Department of Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transport, has officially confirmed its support for the presentation of the JLMD System to the IMO at the next meeting of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee between 29 March and 2 April 2004. The JLMD System will be presented as part of an international drive towards effective regulation of the shipping and oil sector.
