Barrow to Get 400-berth Marina

Barrow-in-Furness in the northwest of the UK is to have a 400-berth marina built as part of a wide-ranging £40 million plan to regenerate the town. If the project as a whole goes ahead as planned, it should create many jobs and bring hundreds of acres of dockland back to life, says the agent for Cumbria County Council leading the project, West Lakes Renaissance.

The planned regeneration of the port includes 400 waterfront homes, new offices, the marina, a submarine museum, a landmark new bridge across Buccleuch Dock, a power boat centre, sports centre, a waterfront hotel and a terminal for cruise liners.

The aim of the Barrow Port project is to bring life back into the area, unite town and port and attract inward investment and visitors, to boost the local economy. A 400-acre site covering a significant proportion of Barrow Port and Barrow Island has been earmarked for re-development.

Mike Baker, Regeneration Manager at West Lakes Renaissance, says £40-50 million of public funding is currently being developed by West Lakes Renaissance, Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council.

The partners will form a strategic management group, to make decisions for Barrow's long term future. A further £50 million will be sought from the private sector to complete the scheme.

The first stage of the work will be a site investigation which is expected to take at least six months to complete. Whilst this is being undertaken, a 300m extension to the newly created Buccleuch Dock promenade is due to start at the end of this month, with an estimated completion of Easter 2004.
