Morley Announce £17m Coastal Defences

A £17 million coastal defence scheme in the UK is to get more than £12 million in Government grant aid, Floods Minister Elliot Morley has announced.

The scheme, which will take about two years to complete, will provide improved defences from Hythe to Folkestone Harbour.

Nearly 3,000 homes and businesses and other amenities will benefit from the works which are essential to reduce the risk of flooding and coastal erosion.

The scheme is being promoted by Shepway District Council and was due to start by the end of this year. Work will involve the construction of new rock groynes, raising and extending the existing sea wall and renourishment of shingle beaches along the frontage.
