Shipyards Could Become Sites for Marinas

Two former shipyards in the UK, one in the northeast and one on the south coast, could become sites for new marinas.

Branmore Investments in Tyne & Wear in the northeast of the UK is promoting the idea of a marina on the site of the former Cammell Laird shipyard, as part of a mixed use development that would also include around 1,000 new homes, a four star hotel with conference facilities, restaurants, shops and a new promenade. Outline planning has been sought and the scheme has been referred to the UK government office for approval.

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council says the scheme is one of a number intended to regenerate the area as a whole, which has a population of around 340,000 in an area of 60 squares miles, the peninsula being bounded by the River Mersey to the east, the Irish Sea to the north, and the River Dee to the west.

In the southeast of the UK, the 12.5 hectare site of the Vosper Thornycroft shipyard at Woolston in Southampton could house a marina as part of a mixed use development that would also include new homes, and retail/business uses, including marine-related industries. The South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) is reportedly recruiting an architect to help with interim planning guidance and the development of a set of proposals for the submission of an outline planning application for the site in the summer of 2004.

The site is vacant because Vosper Thornycroft is moving production to its brand new shipyard at Portsmouth.
