Tanker Giant Joins ECDIS Trial

Oil tanker operators Teekay Shipping is the latest shipping company to enrol for sea trials of the forthcoming Admiralty ECDIS Service , which is expected to launch in Spring 2004. Trials are being conducted to test and prove all aspects of the service ahead of launch. The service has been developed by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to minimise navigational risk for shipping companies while maximising safety and operational benefits.

The Admiralty ECDIS Service provides 'paper chart equivilant' Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) where available.

Admiralty Raster Charts (ARCS) are provided to fill any gaps in ENC coverage. During a vessel's subscription period, the UKHO automatically replaces their ARCS charts with new ENCs as they become available, at no additional cost to the shipping company.
