New 24m Piling Barge Under Build for Walcon Marine
01 Dec 2003
Fareham UK based Walcon Marine , specialists in the design, manufacture and installation of marinas, has purchased a new 24m piling barge which is currently under construction at the Aveco Shipyard on Teesside. The design was developed by Walcon Marine with the detailed design and project management by John Pattison Associates . The purpose built, self propelled barge will be completed in March 2004 and go into service immediately with the company.
With both a crane and piling plant on board, the new vessel will be more efficient than a towed barge and able to handle any work along the south coast of England and beyond. The vessel will be powered by twin 180hp Scania marine diesels driving through Schottel pumpjets for a cruising speed of 6.5 knots. A draft of only 1m will enable the craft to access shallow water sites. Believed to be the first self propelled barge of its type built in the UK, the new vessel will take over from Walcon's old towed piling barge which has been in service for more than ten years.
The new barge will be based at Vancouver Wharf, a 1.5 acre site recently acquired by Walcon.
With water frontage next to Merlin Quay at Woolston on the River Itchen at Southampton, Vancouver Wharf will enable Walcon Marine to store many of its raw materials safely and securely under cover. The acquisition allows Walcon to move from a temporary site in Southampton Docks and will also provide an annual assembly base for the pontoons which the company provides for the Southampton Boat Show.
