New TSHD Launched for Van Oord ACZ

A new 4,750m 3capacity trailing suction hopper dredger was launched for Van Oord ACZ Ltd earlier this month from the van der Giessen de Noord yard in Rotterdam. Van Oord ACZ signed the build contract with IHC Holland in December 2000 and construction was subsequently subcontracted to van der Giessen, a fellow subsidiary with the IHC Caland Group.

The 97.75m loa Volvox Olympia is a twin screw vessel equipped with one 900 mm suction tube mounted on the starboard side and capable of dredging to depths of 32m. The maximum load capacity of 7,390 tonnes is at a draught of only 7.2m, making the vessel well suited to shallow water projects such as port maintenance and nearshore operations such as beach replenishment and land reclamation. Design attention was paid to user friendliness, with sophisticated control systems for the navigation and dredging processes, and an optimised balance of power and performance.

Dredged materials can be dumped through a row of rectangular bottom doors or discharged to shore via a floating pipeline or by 'rainbowing' through a bow nozzle. A total installed power of 6,487kW delivers a loaded speed of 12.2 knots.
