Norwegian Shipowner Earns Prestige
01 Feb 2003
As controversy continues in the wake of the Prestige sinking off Spain, a refreshing approach to vessel management was seen in the UK earlier this month when the single hulled oil tanker Arendal was detained in Shetland after its owners requested a classification society surveyor inspect cracks reported by the crew.
The 235m long Arendal is registered in Norway and owned by that country's Arendal Holdings. It was loaded with 106,000 tonnes of crude oil when the Swedish surveyor confirmed cracks on the deck in way of the No 3 starboard water ballast tank.
Harbour authorities at Sullom Voe then contacted the Maritime and Coastguard Agency who sent their own surveyor, who confirmed the findings of the class surveyor. The Arendal was placed under detention until its cargo could be discharged and further assessments made with regard to repairs.
