VTS Synergy on UK South Coast

Fleet Support Ltd has awarded a contract to supply and install new VTS at the UK's Portsmouth Naval Base to STN Atlas Elektronik. The system is due for commissioning next month. Its facilities include two Atlas 9730 X-band Radars sited remotely at Fort Gilkicker and Shell Pier linked via microwave to the Naval Base VTS control centre, which is being equipped with two 9730 multi-function workstations.

The high resolution display workstations will facilitate automatic monitoring, identification and tracking of all shipping movements by providing overlays of radar targets on electronic charts as well as synchronised logging, recording and replay of all event data.

The complete Naval Base assembly will also be interconnected via microwave links to the neighbouring Atlas-designed VTS system at the Port of Southampton. This will provide a complementary VTS area network for mutual exchange of traffic data, with each party having direct access to the other's remote radar site transmissions.

In the event of any emergency or major incident, either party will be able to assume total individual or collective control over VTS operations within the Portsmouth and Southampton shipping areas.
