01 Feb 2003
The Wartsila 20 was introduced in 1992 to run on heavy fuel oil.
In its 10 years of production it has been further developed to deliver reliable performance in a space saving package. Up to 24,000 hours of operation are being achieved on light fuel oils.
The engine now produces up to 180kW per cylinder at up to 1,000rpm. With four to nine cylinders in line it offers maximum continuous outputs of 520 to 1,620kW. This summer will see the delivery of the first pilot engines at the next output stage, which is up 10% on the current stage.
The current German newbuild is one of 16 boxships of the same class from Aker MTW for various owners for which Wartsila has also supplied Sulzer 7RTA72U-B main engines together with various configurations of the Wartsila 20 gensets according to owners' requirements.
