On-Line Simulation Boosts Crew Training
01 Feb 2003
Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) is enjoying a buoyant period for its training and simulation division, with recently signed contracts from the Canadian Coast Guard College, the Navy Academy in Taiwan and the AMA Computer College in the Philippines. KMSS has also opened a new training centre on its site in Horten, Norway.
KMSS was awarded a contract to deliver E-learning software and services to the Canadian Coast Guard College. A first for the recently released software, KMSS will be hosting the CCGC courses on its maritime. e-campus. com education portal, which gives students the opportunity to train at home or even while at sea.
The CCGC programmes emphasise both professional development and educational initiatives, with the E-learning solution allowing the College to build comprehensive courses that include on-line simulator exercises. The simulation component is thought to be an important and qualitative aspect of validating the transfer of knowledge. The new generation of KMSS simulators supports on-line independent self study supported by an electronic tutoring function.
At its main site at Horten in Norway, KMSS has established a product training centre which offers courses on most KMSS products, including the Maritime Black Box, navigation, machinery control, propulsion control and bridge and engine/cargo simulators.
The centre also runs special 'ship dedicated' courses where the equipment can be configured to work exactly the same as any ship using KMSS products.
Alternatively, the centre can organise and carry out training courses on board ship. With the predicted shortage of trained ships crew in coming years, the 120 participants to already pass through the centre will be the first of many.
