Underwater GPS For Hire

Leading equipment distributor MK Services of Leighton Buzzard has acquired a proprietary GIB (GPS Intelligent Buoy) system from French company, Advanced Concept & System Architecture (ACSA), following successful trials of a unit in Weymouth last October.

Now offered for rental for offshore applications including AUV, ROV, diver tracking, cable or pipe laying supervision and sidescan sonar positioning, the system is reportedly capable of Differential GPS accuracies of between 1 and 10m, depending on shore station availability and type of receivers used.

Originally developed by ACSA in the mid-1990's for the French defence agency, DGA, the GIB portable short baseline tracking system comprises a number of sub-systems linked together by radio transceivers, acoustic links and stabilised synchronised clocks. They are a DGPS shore station, between two and twelve GIB buoys, up to 16 underwater pingers, and a tactical control and display console.

According to MK Services managing director, Malcolm Kirby, the GIB system represents a particularly innovative approach to underwater positioning and tracking, combining ease of deployment with high accuracy.

Its proven flexibility and ease of use should find a ready market, he adds.
