Small Cat Joins Engine Room Family

Caterpillar moved into the smaller end of the marine generator market with its launch this month at the London Boat Show of the first in a new range of compact gensets that will span power output requirements from 9ekW to 99ekW. The new range will enable Caterpillar to outfit the entire engine room of both commercial and leisure craft.

The Cat C2.2 genset displayed at the London Boat Show utilises a direct injection, naturally aspirated 2.2 litre, four cylinder, four stroke Caterpillar premium spec engine which includes a cast aluminium header tank and exhaust manifold, a seawater pump with long-life ceramic seals and a three pass heat exchanger with optional keel cooling for open sets. The C2.2 also has electronic governing that provides isochronous control of the engine speed and offers easy changing between 50Hz and 60Hz. The C2.2 is rated 17.5ekW in both single phase and three phase at 1,500 rpm/50Hz. At 1,800rpm/60Hz the single phase output is 21.5ekW while three phase is 20.5ekW.

The C2.2 is designed for single sided servicing, has a single lifting point and extended service intervals of 500 hours.

It is available as an open set or with a sound enclosure measuring 1,170mm long, 608mm wide and 775mm high. The sound enclosure is aluminium framed with zinc plated steel panels and brings noise emissions to 66.5dBA at 1,800rpm and 63dBA at 1,500 rpm.

Commercial applications have a standard one year warranty and first deliveries of the C2.2 are expected in April. Two smaller Cat gensets are also expected this year. These are the 12.5ekW, 1.5 litre three cylinder C1.5 and the 9ekW, 1.1 litre three cylinder C1.1.

The London Boat Show also provided the first UK viewing of the new Caterpillar C30 marine propulsion engine. Based on the venerable 3412, the turbocharged and aftercooled C30 boosts capacity from 27 litres to 30 litres and raises the power output to 1,520hp at 2,300rpm.

The V-12, four stroke diesel weighs less than its predecessor but delivers increased torque throughout its range. The C30 will target applications in planing hull vessels such as fast offshore rescue and patrol craft as well as some fishing and pilot boats.
