International marine management company Inchscape Shipping Services (ISS) has been appointed as sole Lloyd’s Agents for southern Iraq, effective from the first of this month. ISS will be responsible for the region of Iraq south of the 32nd parallel. This territory includes Iraq’s deepwater port of Umm Qasr and will eventually include the ports of Basra and Khor al Zubayr as well as Basra Airport once these are restored to normal commercial status.

ROV Diffuses Nearshore Survey Risk

The trend to deploy ROVs in nearshore applications gained further momentum recently when Dean & Dyball used an ROV provided by Subsea Vision to survey power station pipeline diffusers off the coast of West Dorset UK. VT Halmatic has secured an order for a Pacific 28 RIB for London's Metropolitan Police Service . The new boat will join the Met's existing Pacific 24 RIBs in patrolling the River Thames and its approaches. The boat will be powered by twin Yamaha marine diesels to provide an operational speed above 40 knots.

Propulsion System Enables Nearshore Stone Dumping

Netherlands based marine contractors Royal Boskalis Westminster have used the Voith Schneider Propeller equipped side stone dumping vessel Cetus to successfully complete demanding coastal protection works at Hastings UK. The unique propulsion system survived 40 delivery cycles in extreme shallow water conditions and enabled a rock dumping procedure only considered possible due to the precise positioning capabilities of the Voith Schneider equipment.

Sealion's New SPSV Thrusts Ahead

Appledore Shipbuilders chose ASI Robicon to provide the propulsion and thruster system for the newbuild 83m shallow draught platform supply vessel (SPSV) being built for Sealion Shipping under Lloyds Register classification. The diesel electric vessel is propelled by two aft main Kamewa fixed pitch thrusters and two bow fixed pitch tunnel thrusters for manoeuvring.

A new class of RNLI lifeboat designated as the FSB II (Fast Slipway Boat) has been in planned development since 1994 and will replace the archetypal Tyne Class lifeboat that has delivered outstanding service around the UK's shores for more than 20 years. The FSB II will be entering the RNLI fleet in 2004/5 as the new Tamar Class boat.

A New Canadian Tug for European Operators

Turkish tug owner and builder Sanmar Denizcilik Makina ve Ticaret Ltd of Istanbul has completed the first of two 22.5m Nehir class twin-screw tugs. The first vessel Nehir is now in service with the company's own fleet and sister-ship Nehir II will be launched by the middle of July.

Rynwaal Shipyards is Busy with Work for Nigeria

Rynwaal Shipyards based at Hardinxveld-Giessendam recently completed the two versatile ASD tugs Ohafia and Zaranda for use in Nigerian harbours and coastal waters. The pair are part of an order from the Nigerian Ports Authority for six tugs to three different specifications. A number of smaller vessels have already been delivered.

The 75.8m LOA Lady Astrid is a Rolls Royce Marine - Ulstein UT 712 specially designed and equipped to accommodate the handling and usage of specialised equipment deployed in deep water anchor handling operations.

'Zwerver II' - A Multicat With a Difference

By their very nature the 'Multi-purpose work vessel' is becoming a common tool for many operators concerned with port maintenance, dredging, and marine civil engineering. In most respects the configuration of such vessels, especially those of the pontoon type, is now well established and the craft are increasingly popular. But when HVS Dredging Support BV of Harlingen made plans to replace their shallow multipurpose tug Zwerver II with a more substantial vessel from the Damen Multi-Cat range the result was a rather more specialised vessel. Bearing the same name as its predecessor, the new Zwerver II has turned out to be a real 'Wolf in Sheeps Clothing'.
