New Metoc-UKHO Data Service Launched

SeaZone , a collaborative venture between the UK Hydrographic Office and Metoc of Liphook, Hampshire, was formally launched at a seminar on marine and coastal geographical information systems attended by 140 delegates in London last month. Designed for GIS users, it provides a packaged data set formatted and ready to use and so simplifies acquisition of essential data needed for projects.

The new service combines data from the UKHO and Metoc along with that from other UK agencies such as the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), the Joint Nature Conservation Council (JNCC), the Crown Estate, and the Environment Agency.

'As users of marine data and GI technology for the past 10 years, we fully understand the data problems that GIS users face when trying to initiate a project in the marine environment', says Dr Mike Osborne, Manager of the GIS & Informatics Group at Metoc. 'By working with the UKHO and other leading data custodians, we can at last provide a real solution that not only tackles these issues and provides real benefits to existing GIS users but also makes the application of GIS in the challenging marine and coastal environments more feasible.'

John Pepper, the UKHO's Head of Commercial Development, added that the venture followed a close relationship with Metoc as part of the Offices's Licensed Partnering Programme which the company joined last year.
