The Certificate confirms that the ship has developed and implemented a ship security plan in accordance with the ISPS Code, which was adopted by the IMO only last December and requires all internationally trading vessels to be certificated by 1 July 2004. From that date, ships not in compliance risk detention in ports or deferral of port entry.
DNV’s security project manager Karl Morten Wiklund commented, ‘With over 40,000 vessels and 20,000 port facilities to be incorporated under the Code, it is vital that the new requirements are as practical as possible to maintain the flow of trade and increase worldwide security levels.’
