Sealion's New SPSV Thrusts Ahead

Appledore Shipbuilders chose ASI Robicon to provide the propulsion and thruster system for the newbuild 83m shallow draught platform supply vessel (SPSV) being built for Sealion Shipping under Lloyds Register classification. The diesel electric vessel is propelled by two aft main Kamewa fixed pitch thrusters and two bow fixed pitch tunnel thrusters for manoeuvring.

In order to minimise the need for ventilation and bulky ductwork, ASIRobicon provided totally enclosed fresh water cooled drive equipment throughout.

The 2,200kW 0/1,200rpm IP44 cage induction main thruster motors are each controlled by ASIRobicon UK 'Aquamarine' water cooled drives with 24 pulse special ASIRobicon design phase shift water cooled transformers.

Aquamarine 12 pulse drives are used to control the 735kW 0/1,200rpm tunnel thruster vertical water cooled motors.

Major features of the drive systems are compactness, low noise and expected low harmonic distortion of the 690V and ship service supplies.
