Rynwaal Shipyards based at Hardinxveld-Giessendam recently completed the two versatile ASD tugs Ohafia and Zaranda for use in Nigerian harbours and coastal waters. The pair are part of an order from the Nigerian Ports Authority for six tugs to three different specifications. A number of smaller vessels have already been delivered.
Ohafia and Zaranda areintended to fulfil a wide range of port and harbour escort services and emergency tasks such as fire-fighting, pollution control, search and rescue and salvage.
The tugs comply with Lloyd's Register of Shipping, class notation (100 A1, Sea Going/ Harbour Tug, LMC and the relevant safety requirements of the latest SOLAS regulations.
Both tugs are 30m in length overall, with a beam of 11m, depth of 4.7m and draft of 3.6m.
Two Deutz/MWM TBD 620 V12 main engines of 3750bhp (total) are coupled via Cardan shafts to a pair of HRP type 711-51 azimuthing propulsion units to give the vessels a bollard pull of 45 tonnes and free running speed of 12 knots.
Rynwaal Shipyards, a sister company of Shipyard K. Damen, has also started a major repair programme for the Nigerian Port Authority. The task involves the repair and refurbishment of 32 vessels of various types and including tugboats, crew boats and pilot vessels. Most of the vessels need to be overhauled and many require steelwork renewed, new machinery, new interior linings and refurnishing, and repainting.
On Monday 7 April the cargo vessel Biglift Traveller arrived at Rotterdam's Waalhaven carrying 24 of the vessels. All of these vessels are alongside at the quay of Rynwaal Shipyard. One of the remaining eight vessels, the dredging vessel Sea Lion , is on route to Romania where the vessel will be repaired.
The other seven vessels are awaiting transportation at their home-port in Nigeria. The total time available to complete this programme of work is 18 months, during which the completed vessels will be returned to Nigeria in small groups.
