Sanmar Introduce the First of the 'Nehir' Class

Turkish tug owner and builder Sanmar Denizcilik Makina ve Ticaret Ltd of Istanbul has completed the first of two 22.5m Nehir class twin-screw tugs. The first vessel Nehir is now in service with the company's own fleet and sister-ship Nehir II will be launched by the middle of July.

It is now common practice for Sanmar to add such vessels to their own operational tug fleet and offer them for immediate delivery to other operators. The company currently has six tugs of different types under construction.

Designed by Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd and designated type TS 22-40, the vessel is aimed at operators requiring a small, compact and relatively simple, tug with a good bollard pull. The tug is capable of ship-handling and coastal towage and can provide limited fire fighting assistance.

Nehir has a double-chine steel hull with an overall length of 22.5m, a beam of 8.2m and draft (aft) of 3.4m. Two Caterpillar 3508 BTA main engines produce a total of 2200bhp at 1800rev/min to drive twin 1950mm diameter fixed pitch propellers through Reintjes WAF 562 gearboxes.

Fixed propulsion nozzles are fitted, each with a stainless steel liner. Manoeuvrability is assured with the use of four rudders with a maximum helm angle of 45º in each direction. This first vessel of the series achieved a bollard pull of 30 tonnes and a free running speed of 12.5 knots.

Two Caterpillar 3045 DINA generating sets, each rated at 60kW, supply electrical power to the vessel. The fire fighting system is supplied by an SMS axially split centrifugal pump delivering 650cu/m of water per minute to a single high level monitor.

The towing gear on this first vessel of the series comprises a Data Hydraulic quick release, disc type, tow hook - tested to a maximum load of 60 tonnes. A heavily built single towing bit provides a mounting for the hook and is surmounted by a small hydraulically driven capstan.

On the well-configured bridge there is a full range of instrumentation including Simrad radar, auto-pilot, GPS, and compass. The radio communications equipment comprises two Sailor VHF DSC radios, an ICS Navtex and Sailor SART. Fully air-conditioned accommodation is available for up to six persons, in four cabins.

The usual facilities are available including a galley, mess-room, stores, WC and shower.
