Chinese Take Away Propulsion Package
01 Jun 2003
Denmark's MAN B&W Diesel A/S has been awarded the contract to supply propulsion plants for two offshore stand-by vessel newbuildings under construction for China Oilfield Services Limited . The vessels are designed by Shanghai Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and will be built by Shandong Huanghi Shipbuilding for delivery in July and September 2004.
The propulsion plant for each vessel is based on a twin screw package with MAN B&W 9L27/38 medium speed diesels, Reintjes gearboxes, MAN B&W CP propellers and control systems. A total main engine output of 8,323bhp will supply propeller thrust for a calculated bollard pull of more than 100 metric tonnes.
Twin four-bladed MAN B&W VBS propellers with a diameter of 2,900mm are geared to run at 214rpm in fixed propeller nozzles.
The Alphatronic 2000 Monitoring, Control and Safety System from MAN B&W, together with a Kongsberg Simrad joystick system which interfaces a Power Management System, will take care of the vessels' manoeuvring and power modes.
The Reintjes reduction gearboxes are each equipped with two PTOs, one for a 1,280kW alternator drive and the other for driving an 800kW Fi-Fi pump unit.
Meanwhile, Hapag Lloyd has placed an order for three MAN B&W 12K98ME engines to power their latest range of containerships. The ME engines each have an output of 68,640kW (93,360hp), making them the world's most powerful electronically controlled engines on order.
Each ME engine, to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea, will be destined to power an 8,145TEU containership measuring 335m long and 42.8m wide.
