Dutch Treat Delivers Caterpillar Power Boost

Caterpillar has launched four new commercial power ratings for its 3516B engine in both HD (High Displacement) and standard configuration. The move provides some 8% more power from an existing engine footprint and weight format.

The new caterpillar 3516B HD engine range now offers 1,825kW at 1,600 rpm. This A rating version will take a load of between 80% and 100% for up to 100% of operating hours for heavy duty service such as for freighters or tugboats. The B rating delivers 1,920kW at 1,600rpm and will handle loads of between 40% and 80% for up to 80% of operating time in vessels such as crew and supply boats and ferries. The new MCR (maximum continuous rating) delivers 2,000bkW at 1,600rpm for vessel applications involving varying loads, limited by application guidelines and leaving a power reserve for unusual operating conditions, limited to 1 hour in 12. In standard displacement configuration the 3516B is also now available with 2,000kW Ahp rating at 1,925rpm for fast vessel duties.

In addition to these higher ratings, a new feature called Wide Operating Speed Range (WOSR) is available for some applications on Caterpillar 3512B and 3516B engines, allowing customers more flexibility in how the engines are operated. WOSR performance is achieved by using a nominal 1,600 rpm rated engine but allowing power to be maintained at a very high level out to 1,800rpm in the governor overrun curve.

The end result is a flat-line constant power curve from approximately 1,200 rpm to 1,800 rpm with impressive torque rise and power reserve for acceleration.

All of the new power options have been made available following a process of joint collaboration between Caterpillar and two of its key Dutch customers, dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster and the prolific builders of tugs and other workboats, Damen Shipyards at Gorinchem. Both companies approached Caterpillar with specific but different application related requirements for more power from the Cat 3500 engine family. And both companies, as well as defining the challenge and their requirements, also offered collaborative input towards achieving their goals. Caterpillar has achieved the increased power output options through a revised approach to turbocharger matching on the engines, a new high tech injector spray pattern and modifications to electronic control and engine speed options.
