Perkins Sabre Power for Gibraltar Pilots

Perkins Sabre engines have been chosen to power two new VT Halmatic 35 pilot launches operated by Gibraltar Pilots. The first vessel, Europa , was commissioned earlier this year and the launch of the second boat is imminent.

Both boats are based on Nelson hull forms which Halmatic describes as an optimised version of the Nelson 35, incorporating a new flexibly mounted wheelhouse which offers greater comfort with improved operator visibility as well as dramatically reduced noise levels.

The GRP-built vessels will be powered by Perkins Sabre's most popular commercially rated engine, the 215 hp turbocharged and intercooled M215C. The six cylinder, six litre units develop their maximum output at a low-stress 2,500 rpm and are fitted to Twin Disc MG5050A gearboxes to give the 10.6m LOA vessels a top speed of 20 knots.

The M215C engine is also being fitted on Halmatic Nelson 35 pilot boats being supplied to Corruna and Algeciras. The engine's extended service intervals, which include a 400 hour or once per season oil change, and low cost of ownership have won it friends at many port and harbour authorities worldwide.
