Pump-Jet Propulsion for ‘Drive Through’ Landing Craft

In another demonstration of the versatility of the Schottel Pump-Jet (SPJ) propulsion system, the British Royal Navy has taken delivery of the first four LCU MK 10 landing craft for the new Landing Platform Dock (LPD) vessels HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark.

The 29.82m LOA craft are equipped with two SPJ 82 Pump-Jets rated at 400kW each for main propulsion and one SPJ 15 RD for auxiliary propulsion. These provide a top speed of 8.5 knots for a 240 tonne landing craft with outstanding manoeuvrability and shallow water abilities.

A total of 10 ships is being built by primary contractor BAE Systems at its own Govan shipyard. Schottel Service provided considerable support during the commissioning of the craft to ensure on-time delivery. The landing craft accommodate a crew of 7 and can operate independently of the LPD for 14 days. They feature both bow ramps and stern ramps for speedier ‘drive through’ loading and unloading. When the craft is going astern, the SPJ 15 serves to stabilise the course, thus replacing a skeg. With the underside free of appendages, the landing capabilities of the craft are greatly enhanced.
