Automatic Engine Room Fire Prevention Detection System

Norway based Hernis Scan Systems A/S have launched a new optical leakage detector system called DETEC which was shown at NorShipping in Oslo earlier this month.

The new Hernis DETEC was on show at Norshipping earlier this month.

DETEC is offered as an optional feature to the established optical CCTV cameras in the Hernis 250 and Hernis 400 series. By pointing the CCTV camera to a critical area such as the fuel oil pump on the main or auxiliary engine, the video motion detection system with its integrated software will detect any possible leakage and thus trigger an alarm at a very early stage. Leakage of gas or fuel oil is detected, the pre and post-alarm image are stored on hard disk and action can be taken long before fire strikes.

With DETEC, fire as such does not trigger the alarm but rather, a sophisticated mathematical analysis of pictures taken interprets cause before a fire can occur.

To avoid possible false alarms, the video motion detection system has criteria facilities such as a detailed masking feature which defines areas not to be analysed for movements or changes in colour, selection of maximum and minimum object sizes and definition of direction of movement as well as the option of setting horizontal and vertical planes in the image.
