Cygnus Delivers Something Different

The latest DS25 inshore vessel to be dispatched by Cornwall's Cygnus Marine made an interesting departure from the yard's more normal output.

The EastPort development at Great Yarmouth will provide new ro-ro facilities and general purpose quays.

Jozias is an open vivier boat for Dutch eel fisherman Mr Van er Endt and will work from Yerseke in the Netherlands.

Based on an open, sealed deck DS25 hull, the boat carries a midships vivier tank which has its waterflow fed through holes in the bottom of the hull. A considerable number of freshwater eels can be kept in this tank for long periods of time. The engine water cooling intake for the boat's 60 hp VM464 motor also comes from the vivier tank rather than a seacock and filtration is provided at source.

Cygnus sales director Ernie Cooke told Maritime Journal , 'It's a most unusual design compared to the boats we build for our inshore fishermen, but quite normal to the eel fishermen in Holland. The shallow draught DS25 seems to be gaining in popularity. We have built several recently and have just taken another order for a typical UK inshore boat for Devon.'

The contract to build Jozias came through Cygnus Marine's Belgian and Dutch agent, Mr Jan De Jonghe.
