Oz Boatbuilder Goes on Safari to seawork

Having spent the last 17 years building aluminium vessels of all descriptions in Australia, Martin Hackett has moved to Pembrokeshire in South Wales UK, from where his Ali-it Marine now offers the latest in aluminium plate technology boatbuilding to the European market. Two of his boats will be on display at seawork2003 .

All Ali-it Marine craft are built to the highest current standards to provide operators with low maintenance, high performance hulls which incorporate technologies delivering the latest in corrosion prevention, noise reduction and paint application. The company is the Germanischer Lloyd certified builder and supplier for Marine Kits Australia in Europe.

Designs by Gavin Mair of Global Marine Design Ltd are water plasma cut to profile and dispatched as flat packs for assembly on site.

Ali-it Marine currently offers three types of vessel; aluminium mono hulls, rigid RIBs and catamarans in lengths from 7 to 14m, built to customer specification.

The company has recently completed a 10.5m rigid passenger RIB which it will be bringing to seawork along with a demonstration monohull.

The new boat features a 3.5m beam, delivering a stable platform which will carry up to 22 passengers.

A single 370hp Yanmar engine powers a jetdrive for speeds of up to 32 knots. A bow thruster enhances manoeuvrability in docking situations and the latest Ultrajet Joystick Control System technology, provided by Ultra Dynamics, makes the vessel extremely easy to operate. The electro-hydraulic control system features joystick actuation of reversing and steering control in helm and docking modes, with a rocker switch operating the bow thruster.

A position reference amplifier provides reverse and steering position feedback. Preset potentiometers and relays required for joystick actuated manoeuvring are housed in a watertight, non-corrosive control box. Wiring harnesses were supplied with multi-pin connectors to allow easy 'plug and play' installation.

Aluminium collars allow for side doors and bow loading and contain foam which will keep the vessel fully afloat should it be punctured or otherwise damaged.

This particular boat has an interesting working life ahead of it as it will be operated by Coastal & Island Cruises, also of Pembrokeshire, to provide Seal Safaris around the region's beautiful coastline and islands.

Some 28 such craft have previously been built for clients in Australia and Indonesia for a variety of uses which includes pearl farming, rig tenders, dive boats and fast passenger vessels.
