Versatile Swede Seeks Civilian Duties
01 Jun 2003
Sweden's Storebro Bruks AB have signed a contract with the Danish Naval Material Command to build four of their special task craft SRC 90E, a 11.88m LOA lightweight, high speed vessel with a load capacity in excess of 2,000 kg. The four vessels will be delivered later this year.
The boat is designed and developed by the Swedish Defence Material Administration in close co-operation with the Swedish Coast Artillery and Storebro Bruks AB. Its compact measurements (2.9m beam) and waterjet propulsion system make it suitable for use in narrow and shallow waters.
The Danish versions of the SRC90E will be operated from a new type of vessel, the Flexible Support Ship. The Danish Navy will procure two FSSs which in turn will each be capable of carrying two SRC90Es. These will be stored inside the FSS on a multi-purpose cargo deck and will be launched aft via a special crane. The smaller craft's duties will include transport of personnel and cargo, surveys of harbours and fairways, rescue missions and military surveillance. In its basic configuration it will carry 10 seated personnel in addition to the driver and navigator. As with many small craft of military origin, the SRC90E would suit a variety of other uses including high speed patrol boat, search and rescue, security, ambulance transport and water taxi.
The vessel's hull is constructed of hand laminated glass and carbon fibre with vinylester resin. The keel area and chines are protected against impact and abrasion in order to withstand landing operations on rocky shorelines and a 22º V-hull ensures good seakeeping and maximum performance in rough weather.
