Electronic Chart Handbook

The Electronic Chart: Functions, Potential & Limitations of a New Marine Navigation System is the title of a new specialist handbook from GITC of the Netherlands, publishers of the monthly Hydro International.

Edited by Adam Kerr, a former director of the International Hydrographic Bureau in Monaco, and with contributions by five leading international experts, the book describes the basic components, functionality, capabilities and limitations of electronic charts.

Topics covered include chart data updating, data availability and distribution, ECDIS, voyage planning and monitoring, integration with GPS, AIS and radar, and track control hydrographic basics. A CD providing demonstrations of several featured ECDIS systems is also included.

According to GITC, the book will be of particular interest to hydrographic offices, maritime safety administrations and academies, shipping companies, universities, equipment manufacturers and professional mariners.
