Mersey Beats Drum for Maritime Expansion
01 Mar 2003
Merseyside is already home to some 500 maritime related companies which have a workforce of 6,000 people and a combined turnover of £1.3 billion. The cluster will promote the advantages offered by the region to attract new companies, create new jobs and increase tonnage by 3% annually.
The cluster includes shipowners, freight and forwarding companies, ship agents, shipbuilders, law firms, insurance companies, cargo handlers, engineers and manufacturers. In addition to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, the area is already home to Shell UK Ltd, Hapag-Lloyd, P&O Nedlloyd Ltd, Cory Brothers Shipping Ltd, Inchscape Shipping Services, and Atlantic Container Line (ACL). ACL has recently expanded its presence in Merseyside by moving its ship planning and accounting departments from Rotterdam to Liverpool.
The launch of the Mersey Maritime cluster also covers plans to establish a £20m maritime training institute on Merseyside.
It will work alongside other area educational providers such as Liverpool John Moores University to offer education and training in all areas of the industry, both nationally and internationally.
