Holyhead Towing Company Orders from Hepworth
01 Mar 2003
The Holyhead Towing Company Ltd has once again returned to Humber based Hepworth Shipyard Ltd at Paull for their next new tug. Due for delivery in January 2004, the new tug will be larger than any of the existing vessels in the Holyhead fleet but similar in configuration to the new Afon Cefni completed by Hepworth in April last year.
An overall length of 25.5m has been chosen, with a beam of 9m and draft of 2.4m for a vessel intended for coastal towing and support to the marine civil engineering industry. Two Cummins K38 main engines will power the twin-screw vessel with a total of 2600bhp.
Also included in the specification is a 160bhp bow thruster, a stern roller, hydraulic towing pins and a 90 tonnes/metre hydraulic crane.
In common with most of the Holyhead Towing fleet provision will be made for the rapid transfer of fuel to other vessels and plant.
This will be the third new tug to be built by Hepworth for Holyhead Towing. The yard has developed a close relationship with the Welsh tug owner and in addition to the construction of increasingly sophisticated new vessels has provided many other shipyard services in recent years. Several major refits, modifications, and repair projects have been entrusted to Hepworth using local dry docks and other resources.
