  • Surge for Seacore's Site Investigation Service

    Since developing its original drilling capability into a total site investigation service last year, Seacore has completed five separate geotechnical marine site investigation contracts for offshore oil and gas projects in the North Sea. Four of these projects were carried out using the company's own in-house designed C100 drill mounted on the new 96m DP3 class vessel Normand Flower, which was chartered from Solstad Shipping. 

  • Success for 'Kursk' Upgraded Russian Navy Rescue Service

    The Russian Navy Rescue Service have successfully completed a two week operation locating and recovering a Pacific Fleet Ka-27 naval helicopter and its crew that was lost in the Sea of Japan. This was the first operation of its kind to bring together the Russian Navy's new equipment, technology and procedures acquired under the 2002 Navy Search and Rescue Support System Development Programme that was initiated following the Kursk submarine disaster. 

  • Briggs Lands Three Year Scots Submarine Cable Contract

    Briggs Marine Contractors Ltd has been awarded a three year contract to maintain over 100 submarine cable connections for utilities firm Scottish and Southern Energy plc (S&S).

  • EA 600 Sounder Upgraded

    Kongsberg Simrad of Norway has upgraded its EA 600 single-beam echosounder for deepwater surveys over depths down to 11,000m, depending on transducer arrangements. The system now features a higher ping rate with accompanying better accuracy in addition to providing an advanced and synchronized passive mode for depth measurements using a pinger. 

  • OMGMultibeam Course

    The University of New Brunswick's Ocean Mapping Group in Canada is convening a specialist Multibeam surveying course at Southampton Oceanography Centre from 16-21 June. Lecturers include leading multibeam experts from Canada and the US.

    The German Hydrographic Society (DHyG) is to stage its 18th annual conference in Vienna from 16-18 June. 

  • US-Dutch AUV Begins Service

    Echo Ranger, a new advanced unmanned autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for deepwater surveying jointly developed by Dutch-based Fugro NV and Boeing and Oceaneering International Inc of the US, has begun service for clients in the Gulf of Mexico. 

  • Veripos DGPS Encryption

    Veripos, a subsidiary of Aberdeen-based Subsea 7, is nearing completion of a programme aimed at safeguarding the rights and privileges of users of its European HF Differential GPS network by encrypting signals to prevent unauthorised access.

  • Scientists Rejoice as 'Ulysses' Monitors Irish Sea

    A TriOS Optical Sensors' hyperspectral radiometer system which will be used to monitor ocean colour in the Irish Sea is being trialed prior to installation on board the Irish Ferries vessel Ulysses, which crosses between Holyhead and Dublin. The system from the German manufacturer has been supplied by their UK and Ireland representative, Hampshire based RS Aqua Ltd, and is being extensively tested on board the research vessels Prince Madog and Celtic Voyager.

    Portchester UK based VT Halmatic have delivered four RTK Logistic Support Boats to the Mauritius Police for use as heavy duty general purpose workboats by the Coastguard Division.

    P&O Ferries and BP Marine will commence trials next month of a new technology that is expected to dramatically improve ship exhaust emissions, including a 95% reduction in sulphur and an 80% cut of particulates.

  • Complex Surveys for New Gibraltar Outfall

    Gibraltar is at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, a geography which produces a highly complex pattern of currents and tides. When the Government of Gibraltar planned a new main outfall a comprehensive integrated survey was necessary to determine the preferred route of the pipe, the ability of the receiving waters to disperse the effluent and the likely effects of effluent discharge on flora and fauna.

    The Millbank Pier, the fifth and final new London pier being built with funding from the Millennium Commission, opens this month. 

  • Rebuild Under Way at Queen's Wharf Falmouth

    A £4 million project to rebuild Queen's Wharf in Falmouth UK began this month following the removal of a massive crane from the seabed. The wharf was destroyed on the night of 8 January during a fire which is thought to have started when a halogen lamp was blown over during a Force Nine gale. The 195m wharf was ablaze along its entire length within just 10 minutes. 

  • Marina Green Light for Port of Lowestoft

    Associated British Ports (ABP) will build a140 berth marina at its East Anglian Port of Lowestoft following planning approval from Waveney District Council. 

  • Hutchison Submits Bathside Bay Planning Application

  • Chouest Now has World's Largest Anchor-handler

    Major American operator Edison Chouest Offshore LLC, based in Galliano, Los Angeles, has taken delivery of the world's largest and most powerful anchor-handling supply vessel. Named Laney Chouest, the ship was completed by associate company North American Shipbuilding of Larose, Louisiana earlier this year and is the third Chouest flagship to carry the name. 

  • Tsavliris is Busy Responding to Emergencies

    Several recent salvage operations have highlighted the worldwide capability of Tsavliris as a leading emergency response contractor. Late March saw the group dealing with problems as diverse as fire-damage and ice entrapment when it was engaged under Lloyd's Open Form twice in the same week to salve vessels as far apart as the Baltic Sea and the Pacific Ocean. 

  • Towlines

    The Italian tug Uran has arrived at Avonmouth to fulfil a short-term charter with Svitzer Wijsmuller. Owned by Tripmare s. r. l. of Trieste, it is an ASD vessel of 4080bhp with a bollard pull of 50 tonnes. Uran will be used as a temporary measure to boost the Avonmouth-Portbury fleet until two new tractor tugs are delivered by Spanish shipyard Astilleros Zamakona during the summer months. 

  • Worldwise Offer a New ASD Concept

    Worldwise Marine Engineering BV (WME), formerly Wijsmuller Engineering, is offering tug owners an azimuthing stern drive (ASD) tug design with many new features. This project is the result of work started more than two years ago with a request for a new tug design with a 65-70 tonnes bollard pull suitable for service in Amsterdam at the proposed Cires container terminal.

    The UK's ship repair and conversion specialists A&P Group has entered into a five year service agreement with surface preparation and coating specialists Muehlhan Surface Protection Ltd, based at A&P's Wallsend Yard Under the agreement, Muelhlhan will take over the surface preparation and coating activities within the various A&P Group shipyards throughout the UK. Initially Muehlhan will operate from the Wallsend and Southampton yards, eventually setting up bases at the other A&P yards.

    Most visitors to the quiet ferry port of Fishguard in south-west Wales are blissfully unaware of a local weapons range and the unique marine services provided by local firm D Little Engineering Ltd. Headed by marine engineer David Little, the company gives maritime support to QinetiQ, operators of the offshore weapons range at Aberporth in Cardigan Bay.
