Veripos DGPS Encryption

Veripos, a subsidiary of Aberdeen-based Subsea 7, is nearing completion of a programme aimed at safeguarding the rights and privileges of users of its European HF Differential GPS network by encrypting signals to prevent unauthorised access.

According to GPS Manager Tony Leary, the first stage has involved reprogramming of customers' receivers mainly in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK so that equipment can now operate with both encrypted and non-encrypted signals.

Leary adds that the second stage of the programme, due to be completed around the beginning of June, involves corresponding encryption of signals transmitted by all Veripos land-based HF reference stations in the Faroes, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

Widely used by major offshore operators, port authorities and others, the Veripos European HF DGPS network typically facilitates positional accuracies of 1-2m over ranges up to 700km. Similar proprietary networks in Brazil and the US have already been encrypted.
