01 May 2003
The UK's ship repair and conversion specialists A&P Group has entered into a five year service agreement with surface preparation and coating specialists Muehlhan Surface Protection Ltd, based at A&P's Wallsend Yard Under the agreement, Muelhlhan will take over the surface preparation and coating activities within the various A&P Group shipyards throughout the UK. Initially Muehlhan will operate from the Wallsend and Southampton yards, eventually setting up bases at the other A&P yards.
The equipment available at Wallsend and Southampton includes Muehlhan's patented u-jet system, which combines traditional dry abrasive blasting (AB) with ultra high pressure (UHP) Hydroblasting.
The combined u-jet blasting (or UHPAB) gives faster blasting rates, reduced grit consumption and eliminates air-borne dust. The system includes a quadruple jet ultra high pressure pump unit, high capacity ultra blaster equipment and four u-jet nozzles.
Work has already been successfully carried out alongside at Southampton on the ro-ro newbuilding Longstone, in drydock for P&O's fast ferry P&O Express, and, also in drydock, for Fred Olssen's 11,209grt cruise vessel Black Prince.
Work has been carried out in drydock at Wallsend to the Orkney Island's 1,908grt passenger/car ferry Pentalina B and Gulf Offshore's 4,000dwt offshore supply vessel Highland Star.
