Mobdock Maintenance Keeps Crane Vessel Moving
01 May 2003
One of the biggest crane vessels in the world required linear impressed current anode replacement and renewal of the dielectric shield around the anode recently in Rotterdam.
It is possible for the 1.5m long anode for the vessel to be fixed to the hull underwater but the result is less satisfactory than when the work is done in the dry. Doing the work in the dry required the specialist services of the Hydrex mobdock system, as the dry work was done 10m underwater.
The mobdock used measures 5.4 by 2.9m, is 1.5m deep and weighs around 10 tonnes. Along with the access shaft, it was transported from the Hydrex premises in Antwerp to the vessel's berth in Rotterdam. The access shaft is disconnected during transport due to its size.
Once on site, Hydrex divers went underwater to clean the area surrounding the anode so that the mobdock could be more easily secured to the hull. The mobdock was then lowered into place where the exact positions of the pad-eyes and stoppers required to support and fix it into place were marked. These were then welded into place while the shaft of the mobdock was connected to the main body above water. The mobdock was then secured to the hull of the vessel over the area where the anode was to be replaced.
Pumping all water from the interior of the mobdock was the next stage, followed by the divers securing the area and making it safe to work in. Lights were rigged and tools, power and air all provided for the main work to begin.
The old anode was removed first and the surrounding area thoroughly cleaned. The new anode was bolted into position, the first coat of primer paint applied to the area, the dielectric shield renewed and two layers of anti-fouling paint applied.
Work continued around the clock, leaving only the time necessary for each coat of paint to dry before continuing with the next action. Once the final coat had dried, the mobdock, pad-eyes and stoppers were removed and the correctly protected vessel continued with its activities.
