First ROV Parametric Sounder

Work on what is claimed to be the first parametric echo sounder capable of deployment on ROV's down to 2000m is now being carried out by Aquadyne AS of Asker, Norway in association with DeepOcean of Haugesund, a major supplier of offshore survey and inspection services to Statoil and Norsk Hydro .

Both companies are coordinating adaption of the SES-2000 system developed five years ago for surface vessel operations by Innomar Technologie of Rostock. By transmitting acoustic signals simultaneously in two slightly different frequencies, the system is capable of obtaining very narrow beam widths with excellent penetrative capabilities and particularly good image resolution, says the German company which is collaborating in the development.

It also includes potential for electronic beam steering and stabilisation, can be operated in rough seas, and classify signal properties of different subsea materials.

Jan-Erik Rygh, Managing Director of Aquadyne, reckons that by providing highresolution sub-bottom profiles through mud and sediment, the refined SES-2000 will mark an important advance in subsea technology for tasks such as pipeline or cable route surveys where location of rocks or boulders is required, or for applications necessitating the detection of fluid mud layers and sediment structures.
