'Ghost Ships' Scare Up Government Reversal

With two of the first four so-called 'ghost ships' towed from America to the UK for scrapping now moored at Hartlepool and the other two mid-Atlantic, uncertainty surrounds their future as the UK Environment Agency has reversed its position and declared its earlier approval of modification to Able UK 'swaste management license 'invalid'. This reversal followed the filing of Judicial Review papers with the High Court by Friends of the Earth and three Hartlepool residents.

‘Venus’ in Green Call to Arms

OCS Goes Boom

Oil Control Systems of the Netherlands has received an order from SMIT Salvage for the delivery of 400m of Ro-Boom 1100 Oilboom . The order contains four hydraulic operated reels, each including a 100m oilboom, fitted in special fabricated galvanised frames which can be stowed in planes and/or on deck. Each reel is also equipped with a 5.2kW diesel powered powerpack which incorporates a high capacity blower and a possibility for skimmer operation.

The £4m reconstruction of the Queen’s Wharf in Falmouth has been completed, enabling ship repair and port services specialist A&P Falmouth to resume normal operations. The original structure was destroyed by a fire in January.

BMT Extends Survey Reach

British Maritime Technology Ltd (BMT) has extended its marine surveying capability through the acquisition of US based Technical Maritime Associates Inc, which provides a wide range of marine surveying services around the Port of New Orleans, on the Mississippi River and along the Gulf Coast. Technical Maritime Services and its team of five marine surveyors will remain at their current location in Metairie, Louisiana. The company will work closely with surveyors at The Salvage Association, BMT Murray Fenton Ltd, and BMT De Beer b.v.

European Marine and Machinery Agencies has been appointed UK distributor for Dutch heat exchanger manufacturer Klima Thermo-Tech B.V. Klima is providing the air to air cooling systems for the azimuth propulsion pods fitted to the new liner Queen Mary 2. Klima also provides the cooling systems that are an essential component of wind turbine generators.

Tidal Turbine Testing Surge in Scotland

Testing has begun of a prototype tidal energy turbine, the EXIM, which both its developers and local government bodies hope will establish Shetland at the forefront of renewable energy developments. Swedish owned Seapower Scotland and Lerwick company Delta Marine are carrying out tests over 10 sites in the Bluemull Sound, the stretch of water between the islands of Yell and Unst.

Marco Polo Funding Slashed

The European Commission hasslashed funding for its Marco Polo Programme , designed to take freight transport off congested roads and put it onto rail, short sea shipping and inland waterways. A final budget of only €75m over five years represents a compromise between the original plan calling for €115m and proposals by member state transport ministers to cut it to a virtually useless €35m.

Cathelco and Jotun Join Forces

UK-based antifouling specialist Cathelco Ltd has acquired the cathodic protection business of Jotun A/S, creating what is claimed to be the world’s largest combined manufacturer of electrolytic antifouling systems for seawater pipework and hull corrosion protection equipment for the shipping industry. Cathelco have purchased the assets of Jotun’s impressed current cathodic protection and pipework antifouling activities in return for Jotun owning a 10% share of Cathelco. With complementary products and two combined worldwide sales networks, the new Cathelco Jotun company anticipates a £7.5m turnover.

EU Bans Single Hull Tankers

The EU has officially adopted its unilateral plan for the accelerated phasing out of single hull tankers. The regulation places a ban on the the transportation of heavy oils in single hull tankers of 5,000dwt or above sailing to or from EU ports. It also accelerates the phasing out of single hull oil tankers on a schedule linked to a vessel’s MARPOL category.

Dometic Acquires TME

Swedish refrigeration specialist, Dometic, has acquired the US-based Taylor Made Environmental, including the European manufacturing, sales and marketing operation. A new division called Dometic Marine Systems has been set up to market the marine products into Europe and the Middle East. ‘I have been appointed managing director of this new division,’ said Trevor Goldsmith, ‘and our customers will only benefit from this new company.’

Practical AIS

Euronav Ltd have launched an AIS module for their seaPro ECS software that can be run on any PC or laptop. When connected to any AIS transponder via the ECDIS or pilot port, seaPro will visualise target data over electronic charts to give an ‘at a glance’ situational awareness. Euronav are also planning a low-cost AIS receiver for craft without transponders whose operators wish to see AIS equipped vessels.

Transas Pops Over to Cork

Marine information technology specialist Transas has moved its international headquarters from Portsmouth UK to Cork in Ireland, citing the advantage of being located within the Euro zone and Ireland’s beneficial development conditions for IT businesses as factors behind the move. The existing Transas office in Portsmouth will host the growing Transas UK team, which requires more space to meet increasing customer demand.
