IZAR Agreement Boosts FastShip

The lengthy gestation of the FastShip project took a step closer to realisation last month when a feasibility study agreement was signed between the American company of that name and Spanish shipyard IZAR. Spanish Government Industrial Holding (SEPI) will supervise and foster the project.

The FastShip concept proposes a high speed container ship service crossing the Atlantic between Philadelphia and Cherbourg in an average of 92 hours, delivering high value, ‘just-in-time’ cargoes in a time frame competitive with air transport but at significantly lower cost. The proposed 265m LOA boxships would be powered by Rolls Royce gas turbine engines to reach a speed of 40 knots.

The first phase of the project will see an in-depth analysis of the project, with IZAR revising the existing design to optimise technology and determine if it is feasible to build the ship. This phase is expected to be completed in December of this year. If the concept is verified, IZAR will build the initial three vessels, with the possibility of a fourth. FastShip, IZAR and other strategic partners, including BP Marine, Cargolux, Cherbourg Port, CDC IXIS, CP Ships, Greenwich Terminals, International Development projects, JP Morgan, the Lockheed Martin Corporation, Rolls Royce and TTS Marine, are jointly working at setting up and developing a financial package for the project, including the construction of the ships and bespoke port terminals.
