'Pallieter' No Palliative for van der Giessen
01 Oct 2003
The last dredger to be built at IHC's now doomed van der Giessen-de Noord shipyard was launched last month in Rotterdam. The 5,400m 3capacity trailing suction hopper dredger Pallieter was built for the Belgian contractor Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME).
The 97.5m LOA vessel follows the recent trend towards versatile medium sized dredgers equally at home undertaking the maintenance dredging of ports, harbours and navigation channels and other shallow water works such as beach replenishemnt or utilising its 60m dredging depth capability to win sand for land reclamation works.
The twin screw vessel is equipped with a single portside mounted suction tube with an internal diameter of 1,000 mm, which can dredge to a depth of 33m for nearshore work.
The alternative 60m long suction tube, also portside mounted, has an internal diameter of 700 mm and features a 1,700 kW submerged dredge pump for winning sand from the greater depth.
At its maximum load capacity of 8,190 tonnes, the Pallieter has a draught of only 7.10m.
Dredged material can be discharged directly into the sea through a row of rectangular bottom doors, pumped ashore through a floating pipeline or 'rainbowed', as is popular in beach replenishment works.
With a total installed power of 6,776kW, the vessel will sail at a loaded speed of 12.8 knots and has accommodation for a crew of 14.
