    Port Authority Settles 'Sea Empress' Claims

    Two claims which had been laid against Milford Haven Port Authority in the wake of the Sea Empress grounding in 1996 have finally been resolved. 

    Puerto Rican Pollution Prevention

    Titan Maritime successfully refloated the M/V Kent Reliant at San Juan Harbour in Puerto Rico last month at the end of a 13 day salvage and response operation. The 522ft cargo ship had grounded just outside the harbour, raising fears of pollution damage to environmentally sensitive areas. 

    Pollution Prevention Proposal

    The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and Council to equip the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), established last year in the wake of the Erika disaster, with the legal and technical means necessary to operate specialised pollution response ships and equipment for collecting oil and other noxious substances from the sea. 

    Pay Salvors More for Pollution Prevention Says ISU President

    Marine salvors meeting in Athens last month expressed deep disappointment at the failure of the joint industry committee to raise SCOPIC Special Compensation rates in line with inflation since they were negotiated four years ago.
