Modular System Lifts £1m Load

Lifting Gear Hire had to respond quickly to an emergency call from Montrose Harbour Port Authority when approximately 80m of the south quay unexpectedly collapsed into the water. Lifting Gear Hire’s Aberdeen UK branch worked with consulting engineers Babtie, providing specialist knowledge and equipment to restrain the remaining quayside and to prevent further collapse from impacting upon the<$>harbour’s freight activities.

Tirfors were attached to plates bolted at intervals onto a section of the quay that had not been damaged. A pull system was then created to take the train of any f urther quayside movement by using the bollards along the collapsed section of quayside. This support system remained in place for over a month until the Port Authority was certain the quay was out of danger. Lifting Gear Hire also supplied and fitted load monitoring links which were used for precautionary monitoring for any further movement for an additional two months.

Lifting Gear Hire has also assisted Great Yarmouth Stevedoring with the unloading of a £1m land drilling rig from the hold of a cargo ship. The expensive and awkward load measured 20m long and weighed 89 tonnes. Destined for Abu Dhabi, it first needed to be discharged, taken away for modification, and then stowed again for its final journey. Lifting Gear Hire advised that to safely lift, unload and reload the rig using Stevedoring’s ship to shore cranes would require a modular lifting beam system, which could be assembled to lift any combination of load weight and length without compromising the safety of the lift. The modular lifting beam system provided by Lifting Gear Hire was a cost effective alternative to designing and fabricating a beam for a one-off job.
