Spill Responsibility for Iran's New Dredger
01 Aug 2004
The launch and naming ceremony took place last month at IHC Holland 'sKinderdijk yard of the 1,000m 3trailing suction hopper dredger Yasin for Ports & Shipping Organisation (PSO), the port authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The vessel was ordered in close cooperation with the local Marine Industries Group (MIG) of Iran in September 2003 and will sail to Iran next month under her own power, where delivery will take place at the end of this year.
Yasin will be deployed for maintenance dredging of Iran's harbours on the Caspian Sea.
The 70m LOA twin screw vessel has a maximum loading capacity of 1,425 tonnes at a draught of 4m and will dredge through a single 500 mm diameter suction pipe to depths of 8m. The hopper is fitted with one row of four bottom doors for direct discharge and can also pump to shore via a floating pipeline. Twin 800kW engines will take the vessel to 11.3 knots. The vessel has accommodation for 14 people.
Yasin is also equipped with an oil recovery installation with two rigid arms. The installation is entirely self-supporting and can be stored onshore, thus minimising disturbance to dredging operations.
Yasin is not suitable for dealing with low flash point oil and is thus classified as a second line oil recovery vessel. However, because Yasin is expected to be in operation more or less continuously and thus manned at all times, it will be able to assume oil spill response duties on very short notice. The additional oil spill response capability should prove beneficial to the operators both operationally and economically.
