More Vessels Ordered by Smit

Smit Transport & Heavy Lift BV has exercised an option to build a further offshore support vessel at the Keppel Singmarine shipyard in Singapore. The original contract was placed with Keppel in March of this year for two 70-tonnes bollard pull anchor-handling tug/supply (AHTS) vessels ( Maritime Journal April 2004).

In keeping with the first two vessels, this 120 tonnes bollard pull AHTS is based on a proprietary design from Keppel.

The vessel will be built and fitted out in accordance with the clients specific requirements and delivery is expected in mid 2006.

The above announcement came hard on the heels of a new construction contract awarded by Smit to Damen Shipyards of Gorinchem for the construction and delivery of two shiphandling tugs of the Damen ASDTug 2810 design.

The first vessel will be delivered in September only 17 weeks from contract signing, with the second unit following in the spring of 2005. This order represents part of an ongoing fleet replacement programme.

The state of the art ASD 2810 tugs will have a bollard pull of 55 tonnes and are destined for employment with Smit Harbour Towage in Panama. Caterpillar main engines have been chosen along with Rolls Royce propulsion units. Winches will be fitted fore and aft to enable the vessels to be used for shiphandling and coastal towage.
