Converted Dock Approaches Completion at Pendennis

Pendennis Shipyard at Falmouth in the southwest of the UK says development work is 'progressing well' on the conversion of the No 1 Dock at the yard into a new, hi-tech painting facility.

Temporary gates have been fitted and the dock has been drained to provide access for further engineering works. The roof has now been installed on the steel framework of the new office block which is positioned adjacent to the dry dock.

When completed this spring, No 1 Dock will provide Pendennis with dry-docking for yachts of up to 70m in length, with no displacement or draft restrictions.

Assuming all goes according to plan, the new facility should be ready to dock vessels from April onwards.

The existing covered hall is to be extended along the dry-dock and refitted with state-of-the-art machinery that will create what Pendennis claims will be one of the most advanced painting and refit facilities in Europe.

The conversion of the dock is the first part of a major re-development of the Pendennis site, the aim of which is to reinforce the company's position as a refit and newbuild facility.

Also included in the development are a new fitting out/refit hall, new joinery and finishing workshops, offices and dedicated store rooms.

Pendennis says a central feature of all the new facilities is how they fit together to provide a cost-effective and efficient environment for both the shipyard and its clients.

At the time of writing, the two concrete sills for the removable gates had been poured, and the roof structures and the new ground flooring to the workshops were complete.

In addition, the Rowit heating and ducting system - which is designed to create the optimum atmosphere for painting - was being installed.

The prime contractor for the marine construction work is Seastructures.
