Tugs & Towing by Jack Gaston

Further Addition to Klyne Fleet

There is news of an important new addition to the fleet of Klyne Tugs (Lowestoft) Ltd .Late last year the company purchased the anchor-handling tug Maersk Logger from AP Moller - Maersk Supply Service A/S .This has been a particularly significant acquisition for the company, who have a long-term contract with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for the operation of four Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) around the coast of Britain. This latest addition to the Klyne fleet will operate independently of the four ETVs, carrying out offshore work and salvage duties as required.

Built as Maersk Logger in 1987 by J Patje at the Waterhuizen Shipyard in Holland, she is a well-equipped vessel of 2311 gross tons, 69.9m in length overall, with a beam of 15.9m.

Two MAK 8M35 main engines develop a total of 12,000bhp to drive twin controllable pitch propellers, rotating within fixed nozzles, giving the vessel a bollard pull of 135 tonnes and free running speed of 16 knots.

The tug has three 600hp transverse thrusters installed, one in the stern and two in the bow. When used in unison, the units produce a combined sideways thrust of approximately 20 tonnes.

Anglian Earl is fitted with a massive winch with two drums dedicated to towing and two to anchor-handling. All four drums have a line pull of 250 tonnes and a maximum brake holding load of 400 tonnes. A stern roller with a safe working load of 400 tonnes is installed and the vessel is fully equipped with 'Sharks Jaw' line handling equipment and towing pins to carry out a wide variety of towing and anchor-handling tasks.

The vessel is also equipped with the usual cargo tanks for the transportation of drilling mud, fuel, fresh water and other bulk products for use offshore.

Anglian Earl has a fire-fighting system capable of delivering 12,000m 3of water per hour. One of her last jobs under the Maersk flag was to act a stern tug during the tricky operation to tow the giant FPSO Bonga down the river Tyne, prior to its delivery voyage to Nigeria.

Recent management changes within Klyne Tugs (Lowestoft) Ltd (Towlines January 2004) and the continuing fleet replacement programme indicate the company's intention to strengthen their presence in the salvage, towage and offshore markets.
