  • In-Situ Machining Revamps Quayside Unloader

    Having established that the slew ring on its 20 year old cement unloader was in need of replacement, the management of Leith & Forth Ports inScotland called in Metalock Engineering of Coventry to machine the 3.28m diameter slew ring surfaces to a high degree of flatness. This enabled a new slew ring to be fitted and restore the unloader to efficient use. 

  • Port of Felixstowe Upgrades Ship to Shore Cranes

    The Port of Felixstowe (UK) is upgrading four of its ship to shore gantry cranes. The Morris built post-panamax cranes, which operate at Felixstowe's Trinity Terminal , are now 18 years old and were designed to the traffic and vessel requirements of a different age. 

  • Houlder Holds Sway With HMS Dumbarton Castle's Cranes

    Marine design consultancy Houlder has delivered two cranes for the Royal Navy's Fishery Protection Vessel HMS Dumbarton Castle . The cranes replace obsolete units and will be used to handle the two RIBs on the aft deck. The RIBs, sited port and starboard, are the main part of the vessel's capability in its fishery protection role.

    Bremen-based Atlas Hydrographic , in association with Ferrostaal de Colombia, has received an order from the Colombian Navy 'sHydrographic Service for a 30kHz Atlas Hydrosweep MD-2 multibeam echosounder with a depth range of 5,000m in addition to a 200kHz Atlas Fansweep 20 shallow water system combining bathymetric and sidescan imaging functions.

    Valeport of Totnes reports a repeat order from the Royal Navy for its Model 740 portable tide gauges, to be used in support of survey applications. Also being supplied are miniSVS sound velocity sensors.

  • Control System Design Award

    The new AutoChief C20 propulsion control system for medium and low speed diesel engines has received a prestigious Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council . Representatives from Kongsberg Maritime were present to accept the award at a ceremony in late November. The award came shortly after Kongsberg had launched the product at the Norshipping exhibition in Oslo. 

  • Shipboard Short Circuit Protection

    The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has developed a current limiter based on high temperature superconductors (HTS) technology to protect ship supply systems against short circuits. Short circuit currents are automatically limited to a non-critical value as soon as the current rises, owing to the sudden increase in the inherent resistance of the superconductor.

  • World's Tallest Mast Delivered

    VT Halmatic rounded off an eventful 2003 with the completion of the world's tallest yacht mast, which will be fitted on the high-tech luxury yacht Mirabella V under construction by parent company VT Shipbuilding . The 90m hollow carbon epoxy mast, which has a maximum cross section of 1.6m and structural thickness of up to 40mm, will support some 3,400m 2of sail.

  • VTM to Aid ISPS Compliance

    Tideland Maritime Systems and Norcontrol IT AS have jointly developed V-Track Modular (VTM), a vessel identification and movement monitoring system designed to comply with the requirements of the IMO's ISPS Code . VTM provides real-time ship identification and monitors vessels' movements within a given area. It is designed to assist in meeting the ISPS Code, enhance the safety of ship movements, improve efficiency and also provide historical data.

The team, including representatives from the DoT , the Maritime and Coastguard Agency , the Chamber of Shipping and the maritime unions, has developed new medical standards aimed at reducing the risk of ill health amongst those who work at sea.

  • Adsteam Takes Delivery of Barunga - the First ASD 2411

    Adsteam Marine Ltd has taken delivery of the first vessel built to the new Damen ASD 2411 design. Named Barunga , the tug was completed in China by Damen's Changde shipyard and is expected to enter service in Australia at the end of this month. 

  • Sanmar Expand Towage and Tugbuilding Activities

    Sanmar Ltd of Istanbul, Turkey, has reported a very successful 2003 for both aspects of their business - tug operation and the construction of new vessels. Seven new tugs were delivered last year and three others currently under construction will be completed before the end of the first quarter of 2004. Since Sanmar entered that shipbuilding field in 1989, using their own in-house resources, a total of 35 vessels have been completed. 

  • Voith Offer a New Low Cost Shiphandling Concept

    German propulsion and tractor tug specialists, Voith Schiffstechnik Gmbh (Marine Technology) continue to pursue their share of the market for shiphandling tractor tugs by offering a new low cost solution. This latest solution, offered to operators requiring an agile, vessel with a useful bollard pull, capable of working in the confined areas of docks and harbours, has been dubbed the HIMET (Highly Manoeuvrable Economy Tractor).

    VT Halmatic Ltd has started the New Year with another substantial step forward in their pursuit of a larger share of the steel tug and workboat market with the completion of the twin-screw tug Prince Rock . One of the few tugs to be constructed in a British shipyard during the past year, the new tug was ordered by the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners of Plymouth.
